How Much Does It Cost to Homebrew Beer?
A good craft beer runs $2.50–$3.00 a bottle at the store, or $15–$18 a six-pack. Brewed at home, the same bottle comes to around a dollar or less. The ingredients, the gear and the payback time are broken down below.
The short answer
A standard homebrew batch is about 5 gallons and yields roughly 50 twelve-ounce bottles. The ingredients for that batch cost about $30–$50, which works out to roughly $0.60–$1.00 per bottle, compared with $2.50–$3.00 for craft at the counter. How homebrewing works
You steep or boil malt extract (or go all-grain) with hops, cool the wort, and pitch yeast. It ferments for about 2 weeks, then you bottle it with a little priming sugar and let it condition for about 2 more weeks before it's ready to drink. So a batch takes about four weeks and gives you roughly fifty bottles.

Bottles
Bottles are reusable, so after the first batch they cost nothing more. Save your empties, or buy a case once and keep reusing it. That's a big part of why the per-bottle cost stays low over time.
The one-time cost: the equipment
