Filtered vs. Bottled Water: What It Really Costs Beta

Tap water costs about half a cent a gallon. A 16.9 oz bottle of it, bought at a convenience store, runs about $2.00 β€” roughly 3,000 times more per gallon than what came out of the tap. Here's what a bottled-water habit actually costs by the year, what filtering it yourself costs instead, and the honest health and regulation questions people ask before they switch.

The short answer

Two single bottles a day, bought on the go at $2.00 each, is about $1,460 a year. Filtering the same volume of tap water through an ordinary pitcher runs about $13–$15 a year in replacement cartridges β€” and that's before counting that the pitcher itself is a one-time $25–$40 buy that pays for itself in the first few weeks. Buying by the case instead of by the single bottle already cuts the bill by roughly 90%; filtering it yourself cuts what's left by another order of magnitude.

What bottled water actually costs

"Bottled water" isn't one price β€” how you buy it matters more than what brand you buy:

The 5-gallon delivery price varies a lot by zip code and provider, so treat it as a rough estimate β€” and note the dispenser's monthly rental isn't a per-bottle cost, so it adds up on top of whatever you pay per jug.

What filtering it yourself costs

Tap water itself is close to free β€” about $0.002–$0.005 a gallon, per the EPA. The real "ingredient" cost is the filter cartridge, spread over however many gallons it's rated for:

That last row is deliberately left in even though it's the outlier. 0-TDS pitchers like ZeroWater are some of the most popular filters in America, and a dollar a gallon is still a fraction of bottled β€” but it's an order of magnitude pricier than the others, so it's worth knowing before you buy the refills.

A worked example

Say your habit is 5 convenience singles and 7 case-pack bottles a week β€” a defensible "typical" starting basket. That's about $596 a year at the register. Filtered through an ordinary long-life pitcher filter (~$0.13/gal, 16.9 oz = 0.132 gal), the same 12 bottles a week costs about $11 a year in cartridges. Is tap water actually safe?

Both tap and bottled water are regulated, just by different agencies with different testing schedules. The EPA regulates municipal tap under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and a typical city system is tested well over 100 times a month. The FDA regulates bottled water as a packaged food, with standards required to be at least as strict as the EPA's β€” but bottlers generally test for things like coliform bacteria on a roughly weekly basis (FDA, Consumer Reports). The fair summary: both are regulated, tap is monitored more often and more publicly (your utility has to publish an annual water-quality report), and neither is guaranteed to be completely contaminant-free.

What about microplastics?

A widely-covered 2024 Columbia University study published in PNAS found an average of roughly 240,000 plastic particles per liter in bottled water tested, about 90% of them nanoplastics too small for older detection methods to see (PNAS, 2024). A few things are worth knowing before you draw a conclusion from that number: the study measures how much plastic is present, not what harm β€” if any β€” it causes at those levels, which is still an open scientific question. The number is also so much higher than older studies mostly because detection got dramatically better, not because bottled water suddenly got dirtier. And tap water isn't plastic-free either β€” it also contains microplastics, generally measured at lower levels than bottled. None of this is a basis for a health claim in either direction; it's a reason some people prefer filtered tap in a reusable bottle, not evidence that bottled water is unsafe.

What "NSF certified" actually means

Filter marketing loves the word "certified," but a certification is specific to a contaminant and a specific model β€” not a blanket promise. The standards that matter for drinking-water filters:

  • NSF/ANSI 42 β€” aesthetic effects: chlorine taste and odor. This is what a basic pitcher filter is built for.
  • NSF/ANSI 53 β€” health effects: lead, cysts, VOCs, and (on newer certifications) PFAS.
  • NSF/ANSI 58 β€” reverse-osmosis systems.
  • NSF/ANSI 401 β€” emerging contaminants not covered by the older standards.

The EPA's own PFAS guidance for homeowners points people toward filters certified to 53 or 58 specifically (EPA). In plain terms: a basic NSF-42 pitcher fixes the taste of chlorine β€” it is not, on its own, a lead or PFAS solution. Before you buy for a specific worry (lead, PFAS, cysts), look up the certification for that exact contaminant on that exact model, not just whether the box says "NSF certified" somewhere.

Reverse-osmosis systems earn the strongest certifications, but they come with two trade-offs worth knowing up front: RO strips out minerals along with contaminants, and it sends several gallons of "reject" water down the drain for every gallon it produces β€” often cited around a 4:1 ratio for smaller residential units (University of Minnesota). Neither is dangerous, but both are part of the real cost of choosing RO.

When bottled water is the right choice

None of the above makes bottled water wrong to buy β€” there are real situations where it's the better call over a home filter: during a boil-water advisory or another water-emergency, for a household with a severely immunocompromised member who needs a cyst-rated filter or bottled water specifically, and for private wells that haven't been tested recently (test at least yearly if you're on one). The CDC has specific guidance for water emergencies worth bookmarking (CDC). A filter is about routine cost savings, not a substitute for following an actual safety advisory.

Is Berkey banned?

It's a common search, so here's the honest answer as of this writing: Berkey's gravity filter systems are under an EPA stop-sale order, with litigation over it still pending, and replacement filter elements have been unavailable through normal retail channels. Berkey has also never held NSF/ANSI certification for its filters. For those reasons we don't carry it as a recommended product β€” not because the underlying gravity-filter idea is bad, but because "currently sold, certified, and in stock" is the bar every product on this site has to clear, and Berkey doesn't clear it right now.

Is it worth it?

If you buy bottled water regularly β€” even just a few singles a week β€” yes, comfortably. A pitcher or faucet filter is a $25–$40 buy that pays for itself in weeks, and everything after that is savings you keep for as long as you keep refilling.
